Common problems

Furnace and heating problems we fix

Furnace turns on, then shuts off

A dirty flame sensor. Cleaning or replacing it is one of the most common winter fixes.

Book a tech

Furnace not igniting or clicking

A failed hot surface igniter or a pressure switch problem caused by a blocked vent or a weak inducer motor.

Book a tech

Furnace blowing cold air

The furnace may be overheating and tripping its limit switch because of a clogged filter or closed vents, or the thermostat fan is set to On.

Book a tech

Smell of gas or a CO alarm

Leave the house, then call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200 or 911. Do not restart the furnace; a cracked heat exchanger or a venting problem needs inspection first.

Book a tech

Old wall furnace

Many LA homes from the 1940s and 1950s still heat with wall furnaces. Parts get hard to find; a ductless heat pump is a common replacement.

FAQ

Furnace repair: answers from our techs

Something else on your mind? Call (818) 351-1443 and a real person picks up.

Why does my furnace turn on and off quickly?

Short cycling usually comes from a dirty flame sensor, a clogged filter causing overheating, or an oversized furnace. A technician can tell which in one visit.

Is it safe to run a furnace that smells like burning?

A dusty smell on the first cold day is normal for a few minutes. A persistent burning, electrical or gas smell is not: turn the furnace off and call.

Should I replace my wall furnace?

If parts are hard to find or it runs on a standing pilot, replacing it with a ductless heat pump adds efficient cooling too, and LADWP, BWP and GWP pay rebates for it.

Do you work on heat pumps in heat mode?

Yes. Heat pumps are common in newer LA homes, and we repair reversing valves, defrost controls and outdoor units.
