FAQ

Questions before you book

Straight answers about prices, arrival times, rebates, permits and maintenance.

General

How fast can a tech get to me?

Inside 10 miles of Burbank most same-day calls are reached within one to two hours. Out to 20 miles we hold a two-hour window.

What does the diagnostic visit cost?

$89, credited in full to the repair.

Are you licensed?

Yes, California CSLB license #1148919.

AC repair

How fast can you come?

Inside 10 miles of Burbank we usually arrive the same day, often within one to two hours. Further out we hold a two-hour window for you. You see real open windows after entering your ZIP code.

Do you fix all brands?

Yes: Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, Daikin, Mitsubishi, Fujitsu and older systems, including units that still run on R-22.

Is it worth repairing an old AC?

If the system is under about 12 years old and the repair is a part like a capacitor, motor or drain, repair is almost always cheaper. If the compressor or coil fails on an older R-22 system, we show you both prices side by side.

Do you charge extra on weekends?

Scheduled windows cost the same every day of the week. After-hours emergency calls have a posted emergency fee that we tell you before we dispatch.

Why is my AC running but not cooling?

The most common causes in LA are a failed capacitor (the outdoor fan stops), a dirty condenser coil after a dusty fall, a clogged filter, or a refrigerant leak. A technician can tell which in about 30 minutes.

AC installation

Is the in-home estimate free?

Yes. A replacement estimate is free: we measure the house, run a Manual J load calculation and give you a fixed written price with any utility rebate spelled out.

Which brands do you install?

All major brands, including Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Rheem, Goodman, Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Fujitsu. We recommend equipment by your home's load calculation, budget and rebate rules, and quote two or three options in writing.

How much does a new AC cost in Los Angeles?

Most single-family replacements we quote start at $7,900 installed. Size, efficiency, duct condition, electrical upgrades and access (attic, roof, crawl space) move the price; the written quote lists each part.

Do I need a permit to replace my AC?

Yes. California requires a permit for a new or replacement central system and, in most of LA, a third-party HERS test of duct leakage and system performance. We pull the permit and schedule the inspection.

What refrigerant do new systems use?

Systems built from 2025 use A2L refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32. They need specific installation practices and leak detection, which our installers are trained for.

How long does installation take?

A like-for-like replacement usually takes one day. Adding ductwork or changing to a heat pump with an electrical panel upgrade can take two to three days.

What size AC do I need?

It depends on insulation, windows, orientation and duct losses, not only square footage. We run a Manual J load calculation; it often shows that a smaller, properly installed unit cools better.

HVAC maintenance

How often should an AC be serviced?

Once a year at minimum, before the first heat. In the hottest parts of the Valley, where systems run all summer, a spring and a late-summer check are worth it.

When should I book a tune-up?

Before your first 90°F days. In most of the San Fernando Valley that is early April; near the coast it is usually late spring.

What does the maintenance plan include?

A spring cooling visit, a fall heating visit, priority arrival windows when something breaks, 15% off repairs and reminders by text.

Does maintenance keep my warranty valid?

Most manufacturers require proof of annual professional maintenance. You get a written report with readings after every visit.

Can I just change the filter myself?

Yes, and you should, every one to three months. A tune-up covers the parts a filter change cannot: coils, electrical parts, refrigerant and drains.

Heating repair

Why does my furnace turn on and off quickly?

Short cycling usually comes from a dirty flame sensor, a clogged filter causing overheating, or an oversized furnace. A technician can tell which in one visit.

Is it safe to run a furnace that smells like burning?

A dusty smell on the first cold day is normal for a few minutes. A persistent burning, electrical or gas smell is not: turn the furnace off and call.

Should I replace my wall furnace?

If parts are hard to find or it runs on a standing pilot, replacing it with a ductless heat pump adds efficient cooling too, and LADWP, BWP and GWP pay rebates for it.

Do you work on heat pumps in heat mode?

Yes. Heat pumps are common in newer LA homes, and we repair reversing valves, defrost controls and outdoor units.

Heat pumps

Is the in-home estimate free?

Yes. A replacement estimate is free: we measure the house, run a Manual J load calculation and give you a fixed written price with any utility rebate spelled out.

Which brands do you install?

All major brands, including Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Rheem, Goodman, Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Fujitsu. We recommend equipment by your home's load calculation, budget and rebate rules, and quote two or three options in writing.

Do heat pumps work in Los Angeles winters?

Yes. Modern heat pumps heat efficiently well below freezing, and observed winter lows at stations across our area average about 42 to 52°F.

How much is the LADWP heat pump rebate?

Up to $2,500 per ton for qualifying equipment purchased and installed from November 1, 2025, depending on SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings. Applications are due within 12 months.

How much does Burbank Water and Power pay?

$1,000 per ton, up to $5,000, when a heat pump replaces a gas system, plus $750 for a needed electrical panel upgrade. Program amounts change; we confirm before you buy.

Is the federal 25C tax credit still available?

No. The 25C credit ended for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025. Local utility rebates are now the main incentive.

Will I need a bigger electrical panel?

Sometimes. Older LA homes often have 60 to 100 amp panels. We check the load first; many installs fit without an upgrade.

Ductless mini-splits

Is the in-home estimate free?

Yes. A replacement estimate is free: we measure the house, run a Manual J load calculation and give you a fixed written price with any utility rebate spelled out.

Which brands do you install?

All major brands, including Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Rheem, Goodman, Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Fujitsu. We recommend equipment by your home's load calculation, budget and rebate rules, and quote two or three options in writing.

Are mini-splits cheaper to run than central air?

Usually yes: there are no duct losses and you only condition the rooms you use. Inverter compressors also slow down instead of cycling on and off.

How many zones do I need?

It depends on the layout; open living areas can share one head, bedrooms usually need their own. We size each zone with a room-by-room calculation.

Do mini-splits qualify for rebates?

Yes. They are heat pumps, so LADWP, Burbank Water and Power and Glendale Water and Power programs cover them. We check eligibility first.

Can a mini-split heat my home?

Yes. They heat efficiently in LA winters and can replace a wall furnace completely.

Emergency HVAC

Do you really answer at night?

Yes. The 24/7 line is answered by a person who books the on-call technician and tells you the emergency fee and arrival estimate.

How much does an emergency call cost?

There is a posted emergency fee for after-hours dispatch, which you hear before you agree. The repair itself is a flat price you approve on site.

My AC is frozen. What should I do?

Set the thermostat to Off or Fan only and let the ice melt for a few hours. Running it frozen can damage the compressor.

Indoor air quality

Can my AC filter wildfire smoke?

Partly. A MERV 13 filter catches most fine smoke particles if air actually passes through it, so the system must handle the extra resistance and the filter frame must be sealed.

Are UV lights or ionizers worth it?

We focus on filtration and duct sealing, which have the strongest evidence. We do not install devices that produce ozone.

How often should I change a MERV 13 filter?

Every two to three months for 1-inch filters, and every six to twelve months for deeper media filters, sooner during fire season.

Ductwork

How do I know if my ducts leak?

A duct leakage test pressurizes the system and measures how much air escapes. It takes about an hour and gives a number, not a guess.

Should I replace ducts with a new AC?

If ducts are over 20 years old, undersized or leaking badly, yes. A new system on bad ducts loses much of its efficiency.

Is duct cleaning worth it?

Sometimes, after construction or smoke damage. Sealing leaks and filtering better usually matter more for dust.
