A new system in a Van Nuys ranch home should start with the ducts. Original attic ducts here are often uninsulated or poorly sealed, and in summer that attic is extremely hot. Replacing or sealing them can cut the size of the system you need. Better attic insulation, done at the same time, keeps the new system from fighting the roof. A Manual J load calculation then sets the tonnage for the house as it is now, added rooms included.
Outdoor placement is usually simple on these lots, but neighbors are close, so we choose quiet equipment and keep it away from bedroom windows. In the Lake Balboa area, larger lots sometimes allow the condenser in the back yard. Many homes still have 60 or 100 amp panels, and we check whether the new system fits or an upgrade is needed. For apartment owners, replacing rooftop package units or through-wall units is often more practical than adding new ducts. Ductless heat pumps are another option, one unit at a time. Since LADWP's heat pump rebate is high, a heat pump usually belongs in the comparison. We also check the gas line and flue, in case the furnace stays.
Converted garages and back units often need their own system, usually a ductless heat pump. Older apartments with rooftop package units can be replaced unit by unit, which spreads the cost. Homes near the airport benefit from quieter equipment and better window seals. Attic access in older ranch homes can be tight, so we check it before choosing the air handler. The final quote lists duct work, equipment and electrical separately.
Ranch homes here usually keep the condenser in the side yard, with the air handler in the attic or a hallway closet. On larger Lake Balboa lots, the back yard can be a quieter spot. Apartment buildings may keep rooftop package units, or switch to ductless heat pumps with small outdoor units. Attic platforms and safe access matter, since the attic is one of the hottest places to work in summer. Converted garages get their own ductless system rather than a duct run from the house.
LADBS and a HERS rater check the work, and we attend both visits. We file LADWP's rebate after the final inspection. You keep the permit card, HERS results and warranty registration together.
Van Nuys has many 1950s and 1960s ranch homes with original electrical panels. Before quoting a new system, we check whether the panel can carry it, and we say so up front if an upgrade is needed. Many installs fit without one. Knowing early keeps the price and the schedule honest.
Apartment owners often replace several rooftop or side-yard units at once. Bundling them reduces trips, permits and crane days. LADWP's heat pump rebate applies per qualifying system, so a building project can earn a meaningful total. We help owners plan which units to replace first.
The NOAA weather station 3 miles from Van Nuys, Van Nuys Airport, averaged 50 days a year at 95°F or hotter and 21 days at 100°F or hotter in 2016-2025. Its hottest reading was 118°F on September 6, 2020.
California requires a permit for a new or replacement central system, and most replacements also need a third-party HERS test of duct leakage and system performance. We pull the permit, schedule the HERS rater and meet the inspector.
LADBS issues express permits online, with no plan check, for replacing an AC with one of the same size and type and for adding equipment of 5 tons or less, so a standard change-out permit can be issued the day it is requested. Systems that need plan review go through ePlanLA.

Van Nuys is served by LADWP. Up to $2,500 per ton for qualifying heat pumps purchased and installed from November 1, 2025. The amount depends on SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings. That is far more than for a standard AC, so we price both options.
